Magnetic resonance imaging or MRI is a technique
used by doctors’ to view the internal organs of our body and detect the defects
in them. It creates and image of the organ to be viewed with the help of a
computer, radio waves and a magnetic field. The MRI of the spine produces a
detailed image of the spine and its surrounding tissues, which are found to be
clearer and more specific than any other method of imaging. One should have to
be injected with a contrasting material which causes minimal allergic
reactions.
MRI of spine
Physicians use MRIs to diagnose medical conditions
of the spine through a non-invasive medical test. The whole anatomy of the
vertebrae can be viewed in the MRI of the spine. MRI is a highly sensitive test
of the spine in the routine clinical practice.
Uses of spine MRIs
Magnetic resonance imaging of the spine is
done to:
- Monitor if there are any changes after a surgery
- Assess if there is any compression in the spinal cord and nerves
- Detect whether any congenital anomalies of the spine are present or not
- Ascertain if any tumor is formed or spread to the other parts
- Find infections or inflammation of the spine and its location
Procedure
The patients are made to lie down on a
movable examination table and straps might be used to keep you in the correct
position when the imaging takes place. The appropriate devices are place
adjacent to the region which is to be pictured. After injecting the contrast
material, if required, the patient is placed into the magnet of the unit and
the images are taken.
