Spinal Surgery and Recovery

Spinal Surgery and Recovery

Patients who have back surgery on their way might think that the surgery is the main difficult part. That after enduring the surgery things will get all fine. But recovery after surgery is another major thing which they have to go through. Recovery after any surgery is no piece of cake and recovery after back surgery is even more so. Giving ample time to your body to heal on its own is absolutely necessary after back surgery. Your body needs rest and recovery before it can resume its regular day to day activities. Your recovery period will vary according to the type of back surgery you have to undergo. Some might take much longer time than others.
Your doctor will of course provide various options to you on the type of surgery you should undergo. It would be better for you if you do some research on every type of surgery before you choose which one you would prefer. Knowing all the benefits, risks and recovery time about each of the surgeries will help you make the correct choice for yourself.

Spinal fusion surgery is of two main types- the traditional open back surgery and the minimal invasive surgery. In the traditional open back surgery a large incision is made. This type has become quite orthodox and is not used nowadays. It has more risks and the recovery period is also very long. You might be kept in the hospital to be monitored regularly for two to three days after the surgery. Even after that you might not be able to bend of lift heavy objects or even sit for a long time in the same positionfor several weeks. The minimal invasive stabilisation surgery is done by making a very small incision. The surgery itself takes much less time and the recovery period is also less.
