Know the types of spinal surgery

Majority of the people of the world are suffering from back problems or mainly back pain. The major causes of these back problems are the unhealthy lifestyle, improper posture, lack of exercise, sitting for long hours etc. When the back pain becomes quite unbearable and continuous you should go visit an orthopaedic doctor. He will at first suggest you various medications and physical exercises to perform to improve the back pain. But when all the non-surgical options seem futile, surgery needs to be performed. Spinal surgery is supposed to improve the quality of life of the patient. Doctors always prefer non-surgical treatments over surgery. They recommend surgery only after several months of other treatment render useless.
After a thorough examination, your doctor will suggest the kind of spinal surgeries which might help improve your condition and relieve you of the pain. The most commonly performed spinal surgeries are:
Foraminotomy
In this type of surgery, the tissues which compress the nerves in the spinal region are removed. In the surgical process, sometimes even parts of bones which constrict the nerves found in the spine need to be removed.
Laminectomy
Spinal problems such as spondylolisthesis and stenosis are cured by this type of surgery. In this surgery, parts of the back bones are removed so that pressure is reduced on the spinal nerves.
Spinal disc replacement
This type of surgery is not that common, yet it is considered a very most modern approach to treating back pain. When a spinal disc gets damaged, it is replaced with an artificial one in this surgery.
Spine fusion
This spinal surgery involves the joining or fusion of two or more vertebrae using grafts to increase the stability of the spine. This does restrict the movement of the spine though.
Discectomy

Herniated discs are used to treat using this type of surgery. The surgery involves the removal of either a part or the whole disc.
