Do you have Spinal Stenosis?

Do you have Spinal Stenosis?

The vertebral bones in our body supporting and stabilising the upper body is known as the spine. Because of our spine we are able to turn and twist. The spinal nerves go across the openings of the vertebrae and transfer signals from the brain to the other parts of the body. These nerves are protected by bones and tissues surrounding them, and if by any chance they are damaged, our daily functions like balance, walking, and sensation, etc. will get affected.

Spinal stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a type of disorder of the spine where the spinal column gets narrowed and compresses by the spinal cord. This condition gradually increases. Sometimes the narrowing is not significant, so there are no symptoms observed. But if the spinal cord gets too compressed many adverse effects will be observed.

Symptoms

As the nerves get more and more compressed over time, the symptoms gradually increase. Some of the most common symptoms experienced are:

  • Your legs or buttocks will get numb
  • While walking or standing there will be lower back pain
  • There might be some problems with balance
  •  Also your legs and arms  will get weak

Causes

Spinal stenosis is most commonly caused because of aging. But there are some other reasons too that cause this condition. Some of them are:
  • Spinal defects from the birth
  • Any kind of spinal curvature
  • Spinal cord which is naturally narrow
  • A type of dwarfism known as achondroplasia
  • Tumours in the bones

Treatment

After diagnosing the disorder, you can opt for first-line treatment or surgery. Some other options which relieve the pain other than surgery are:
  • Massages
  • Acupunctur
  • Ice or heat packs
Most people with this condition lead a normal life, though you might have to compromise on some of your physical activities.
